JEFFERSON —
Seven years ago, dispatchers at the Ohio State Highway Patrol would wince when a call came in.
The phone hadn’t brought much good news — 10 motorcyclists died on Ashtabula County roads that year, making 2005 a biker’s nightmare.
This year will mark the seventh annual North Coast Motorcycle Safety Ride on May 19, a biker’s tour of Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties to raise motorcycle safety awareness and to ensure the tragedies of 2005 are never relived, Sgt. Ron Bornino said.
The safety ride is sponsored by OHP, Motorcycle Ohio, Safe Communities, and University Hospitals. Proceeds benefit Safe Communities in all five counties.
“This year the ride will feature two starting points, one at The Ashtabula County Fairgrounds and the other at Bike Town Harley Davidson in Mahoning County,” Bornino said. “Both groups will meet at the Parkman Community Center, located in Geauga County.”
Bornino said the riders will return to the Cortland Moose and Family Center for festivities, safety displays and food.
“The entire ride will be escorted by OHP troopers and local law enforcement officers,” he said.
Riders can register the day of the ride at each starting point from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. First bike out at 11 a.m. from each starting point.
Bornino said drivers need to watch out for motorcyclists as the weather turns warmer and the bikers take to the roads.
