Geneva Senior Center celebrates

GENEVA —  The Geneva Senior Center celebrated all things vintage with bingo, food and song Thursday for senior appreciation day.

The event, which included speakers, games, lunch, awards, entertainment and lunch by Community Action of Ashtabula County, was open to seniors in Ashtabula County and Madison. More than 120 people attended the event.

Senior center board member Ray Gruber said he is impressed with the programs and services the center provides to the area’s older residents.

“I can see the senior center here is growing and will continue to grow,” he said. “I see nothing but great things in the future.”

The center has grown each year, site manager Denny Brown said, and now includes pool, pinochle, music, crafts, puzzles, health and prescription services, transportation, and more.

“We are providing more and more services as needs arise and change,” he said. “The bus and transportation program here has such a demand. We aren’t just taking seniors to the doctor and the grocery store — we drive them across town to see friends, we keep them involved in the community.”

Brown said the Geneva Senior Center is a full-service facility, helping the elderly find everything from medical care to food services to social outlets.

Senior center founder Anne Stott took advantage of the center’s transportation so she could attend the festivities. The bus picked her up at her nursing home in Madison.

“I am amazed at how the center has grown over these years,” she said. “So many people are involved and the community really cares about the seniors.”

Dorothy Stitt, 85, lives at Lakeland Nursing Home. She spends several days a week at the Geneva Senior Center, enjoying bingo on Tuesdays and coffee, donuts and entertainment on Wednesday mornings.

“I love to play bingo,” she said, “and I can’t wait for lunch today.”

County Commissioner Dan Claypool said he is astounded by not only the work and dedication people put into the senior center and programs, but also by the staggering need for services countywide.

“Last year Meals on Wheels served 57,000 delivered meals. The Geneva Senior Center bus traveled 150,000 miles getting seniors to doctor’s appointments and to the store and to community events,” he said. “It makes me wonder what would happen to those people who need these services if the taxpayers weren’t so gracious to our older generations.”
