Boaters remembered during Blessing of the fleet

ASHTABULA — The tradition of blessing area mariners began more than six decades ago when area immigrants decided to have a ceremony using Ashtabula Harbor, said Ashtabula City Manager James Timonere during the 63rd Blessing of the Fleet ceremony.

Timonere said pleasure boaters and other maritime activities help the local economy. “It is only fitting we offer (blessings for) their safe transportation,” he said.

Bradley Lampela, an Ohio Department Natural Resources Division of Watercraft officer, urged those in attendance to practice safe boating practices at all times and always refrain from using alcohol while boating.

“We commend those who sail this harbor and this lake to His (God’s) care,” said the Rev. Raymond Thomas, pastor of Our Lady of Peace parish.

“We humbly invoke your blessing upon us ... give us safety from the perils of the sea,” said Bob Frisbie of the Ashtabula Marine Museum.

Emily and Madeline Kochevar threw a wreath into the Ashtabula River in memory of those who have died in the area’s waters.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary participated in the ceremony.

The ceremony was held near the Ashtabula U.S. Coast Guard Station just west of the Ashtabula Lift Bridge. The ceremony has been sponsored by the city’s Catholic parishes for many decades.

Colors were posted by members of the American Legion Post 103 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 943.
