An Ashtabula man faces up to 23 years in prison after a jury found him guilty Thursday of one count of kidnapping, one count of abduction and two counts of felonious assault, according to Ashtabula County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Sartini.
The incident began Feb. 18 on West 38th Street in Ashtabula, when Rodney Turner, 45, got into a fight with his then-girlfriend, Sartini said. Sartini said Turner broke her eye socket in two places, broke her nose in two places and caused additional lacerations to her face before fleeing the scene.
The police were called, and Ashtabula Police Officer Thomas Perry captured Turner five hours later, Sartini said.
The abduction charge was regarding the victim’s daughter, Sartini said.
Perry and Ashtabula Police Officer Terry Tulino testified at the trial held this week in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court. Judge Gary Yost presided. The state of Ohio was represented by assistant prosecuting attorney Susan R. Thomas. Public defender Marie Lane represented Turner.
After the jury found Turner guilty, Yost ordered a presentencing investigation.
Turner remains in the Ashtabula County Jail on a $10,000, or 10 percent surety, bond.
Turner is no stranger to area law-enforcement authorities. During the past few years, he also has been convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, driving without an operator’s license, obstructing official business and criminal trespassing.
