Children discover discarded meth lab in Harpersfield Township

JEFFERSON — A handful of children discovered an abandoned methamphetamine-making lab while walking home from school Thursday in Harpersfield Township, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

The lab, contained in a 5-gallon bucket, contained lye and other harsh chemicals, deputies said.

A parent who lives on Belle Road in Harpersfield contacted deputies around 3:40 p.m., according to a report. While walking home from their bus stop, the children found the sealed bucket at the treeline near the road, deputies said. The kids took off the lid and found tubing and chemicals inside, according to a report.

Ages of the children were not immediately available.
