One of the city’s most visible landmarks is set for $2.3 million worth of improvements in 2014.
The West Avenue Bridge at West 30th Street is scheduled for a deck replacement as part of a Ohio Department of Transportation rehabilitation project.
City Manager Jim Timonere asked City Council for an ordinance Tuesday night to enter in an agreement with ODOT for the bridge work in the amount not to exceed $457,024, as the city’s 20 percent contribution designated by ODOT. City Council unanimously approved the manager’s request.
The money will come out of the street and bridge improvements account, Timonere said.
“It’s actually two bridges; one goes over the railroad tracks,” he said, noting he believes the project will include lighting.
In other business, City Council:
• Approved the manager’s request to enter into an agreement with Motorola Solutions of Schaumburg, Ill., through state purchasing in the amount not to exceed $101,878, to buy new police radios;
• Approved an ordinance adopting early retirement incentive plans to eligible employees in the public works, sanitation and waste water treatment divisions of the city, and
• Discussed the city’s current curfew ordinance and how its half-hour times and different times for different age groups are somewhat confusing and difficult to remember. Ward 1 Councilman Rick Balog, who also chairs the safety forces committee, said there is talk of changing it because even the police have to look up the times.
