Ashtabula BOE resolves to support renewable energy
ASHTABULA — Within months, wind turbines could be spinning lower-cost electricity for city schools.
Ashtabula Area City School Board of Education members, at Wednesday’s regular meeting, voted to support the use of wind turbines as a source of renewable energy for its new schools.
A letter in support of a wind turbine renewable-energy project will accompany an application for a $750,000 grant, Superintendent Joseph Donatone said.
“There are federal funds that flow through the state government,” he said. “We are applying for a grant to get those funds.”
The district would like to erect a 750-kilowatt wind turbine on Wade Avenue, where the district is preparing to build five campus-style elementary schools.
School officials are committed to reducing operating costs of all new buildings by installing the most-efficient equipment and operating systems available, according to the resolution adopted Wednesday. They are looking for ways to defray soaring utility bills and agreed wind turbines may be the way to go, Donatone said.
The new high school and junior high schools unveiled during the past three years are powered by natural gas and electricity. Members of the board of education agreed a wind turbine would pay for itself through energy generation.
