JEFFERSON — The new Jefferson Area Junior High and High School building will be ready for its Oct. 4 dedication, with the exception of gym bleachers, the architect said at Tuesday’s school board meeting.
“The biggest concern is the wood floors and the gym bleachers,” said architect Brent Buehrer, of the Buehrer Group, as he gave his monthly presentation on the 162,000-square-foot building. “I don’t believe we’re going to be able to erect bleachers on the gym floor.”
Buehrer cited trouble with moisture and the wood floor. Then, it will take an additional two weeks to “put the bleachers in,” he said.
The Jefferson Area Local School Board met Tuesday night in the library of Jefferson Elementary School.
However, the board received some very good news: Buehrer said he knows of nothing that will impede school faculty and staff from moving into the building Oct. 17, 18 and 19.
The students’ first day of school in the new building is scheduled for Oct. 20, Superintendent Douglas Hladek said.
Buehrer said the big news in the construction progress since last month is the floors. The porcelain, ceramic and quarry tiles, and the carpeting will be completely installed in time for the dedication.
“They will be done next week,” he said, noting the wood floors are his only concern.
Painting is complete and basketball backstops, athletic curtain and elevator installed.
The 750 seats for the auditorium are on-site and are being assembled, Buehrer said.
“The high school is 95 percent ready to go,” he said. “The furniture is arriving Sept. 21.”
Outside, workers have started surfacing — rubberizing the track, he said.
“We’ll have the track completely finished by Sept. 26,” he said.
Thanks to the work of Jefferson Area High School senior Keegan Maple, the concrete pad around the flagpole outside the new school, is beautifully done and landscaped, Hladek said. Maple did the work as his Eagle Scout project, he said.
In other business, the board announced Jefferson’s homecoming parade is set for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2; homecoming dance, Oct. 3; and the dedication of the new junior-senior high school is Oct. 4.
