JEFFERSON —
Country music artist Joe Nichols will perform Aug. 8 at this year’s Ashtabula County Fair, fair officials said.
The concert will take place at 8 p.m. in the grandstand. Tickets will go on sale in July.
Nichols’ chart-toppers include, “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off,” “The Impossible” and “Brokenheartsville.”
The Arkansas native thrilled Ashtabula County fair-goers 10 years ago, said Dale March, one of three fair board members in charge of fair-time entertainment.
Since that time, Nichols has become “a big star,” releasing seven studio albums, March said.
This year’s fair will be held Aug. 6-11 at the fairgrounds on South Poplar Street.
Fair board member, Everett Helfer, is planning a moving tribute to county veterans who have been awarded a Purple Heart, presenting them with a handmade, red, white and blue quilt or afghan spotlighting the Purple Heart award, he said.
The afghans and quilts will be displayed in the craft/grange building during the fair.
The quilts will not be returned to the crafter after the fair, but rather, a brief biography of each veteran’s service will be read Aug. 9 in front of a crowd at the grandstand and each veteran will be presented with a quilt or afghan.
“We will have a flyover/salute to veterans at 5 p.m.,” Helfer said.
Any extra quilts or afghans will be donated to veteran’s hospitals or nursing facilities.
So far, Helfer has gathered the names of 32 veterans to honor.
“We could use more,” he said. “We want to recognize everybody.”
The fair board is excited about this year’s entertainment line-up and activities, which will include:
• Motocross, Aug. 6;
• Tractor pull, Aug. 7;
• Two nights of Demo-lition Derby, Aug. 9-10;
• Market animal sale, Aug. 10;
• Tiger show, every day;
• An Abraham Lincoln impersonator by the historic log cabin, and
• A new (yet to be named) mascot to promote the fair.
