Harbor merchants celebrate history, future

ASHTABULA — ASHTABULA — A look back to help celebrate the future was the focus for more than 30 people who attended a ceremony at the Ashtabula Lift Bridge.

“We are a living part of the history we are celebrating today,” said Glen Warner who spoke during the ceremony that also included the dedication of 33 plaques that have been placed on historic buildings in Ashtabula Harbor.

Warner said sacrifice by generations of people created the community’s history and builds the foundation for the future. He said the siren announcing the raising of the lift bridge, which occurs every 30 minutes from April to October, is a reminder of what has gone before.

The Lift Bridge Community Association formed in 2008 when a bridge leading to Ashtabula Harbor was closed and merchants were concerned they might not survive, said LBCA President Shelly Mullen.

She said great hope, and cooperation, came from that dark time. “We turned a burden into a blessing,” she said.

One of the LBCA founders, Ren Carlisle, also addressed the crowd during the ceremony.

“It has taken four years to complete this historic building plaque project,” Carlisle said. He said it is the first of three building blocks that are in the works for the Bridge Street area.

“The plaques represent another step in our journey to become a regional (tourist) destination,” Carlisle said. He said informational signs and bike racks are also in the plans.

The three major projects include the completion of the North Shore Trail that will be linked from West Avenue to Ashtabula Harbor; the development of Walnut Beach and new development along Bridge Street, Carlisle said.

The Civic Development Corporation was instrumental in making the project a reality, he said.
