Deputy hurt restraining Ashtabula drug suspect

JEFFERSON — An Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputy suffered a minor knee injury Monday during the apprehension of an Ashtabula man suspected of drug-related crimes, sheriff reports show.

Deputy Scott Daniels scraped the knee while tussling with the 42-year-old suspect. The man was eventually captured in the area of West 44th Street in Ashtabula, deputies said.

The incident began about 12:45 p.m., when Daniels witnessed what he suspected was a drug transaction taking place in a vehicle parked at a Route 20 business in Ashtabula. When the vehicle pulled out, Daniels followed and pulled it over for traffic infractions, according to a report.

The driver immediately exited the vehicle, a newspaper in his hand, deputies said. Inside the paper was a small quantity of crack cocaine, the report states. The man tried to run, but was restrained by Daniels. The pair fought and the suspect broke free, running toward West 44th Street, deputies said.

With the help of several Ashtabula police officers, a perimeter was established and the suspect was found hiding between houses in the neighborhood, deputies said.

The suspect, who lives on West 33rd Street, faces charges of resisting arrest, possession of crack cocaine and escape, Niemi said.
