CONNEAUT —
Some Mill Street residents have apparently run out of patience with a vacant house that’s been on the city’s demolition list for years.
In recent days, signs have sprouted adjacent to 628 Mill St., taking the city to task for inaction on the small house nearly hidden from street view by thick vegetation.
“Shame on you, Conneaut,” says one sign north of the house. “Take me down.”
“C’mon city, do something,” implores another south of the building. “There’s your tax dollars at work.”
Neighbors that abut the house on Mill Street could not be reached for comment on the signs.
The house sits on the city’s list of buildings facing demolition, and was among the dozen or so targeted to fall with the use of Neighborhood Stabilization money. In early March, however, City Manager Tim Eggleston told City Council 628 Mill St., had been pulled from the list because an attorney had become involved.
At varying times, the city was told the owner — who lives in Columbus — was interested in repairing the house or wanted to handle the demolition herself to save money, officials said. The house was built in 1933, according to records on file with the Ashtabula County auditor’s office
The city has seemingly run out of patience. Deanna Gates, Conneaut zoning/housing manager said Friday she will confer with Law Director David Schroeder on the matter.
“We’ll see what we can do to get this situation rectified,” she said.
Schroeder also promised action. The owner’s Ashtabula County attorney has been notified and told “something must be done immediately,” he said Friday.
Only a handful of houses remain on the original NS list. Recently, Conneaut learned it will receive $150,000 from a nation-wide mortgage company settlement to demolish additional houses.
