JEFFERSON — A combined effort of law enforcement agencies will be working to catch drunk drivers during the next several weeks.
The state-wide program “Over the limit, under arrest” kicked off Friday at the Ashtabula County Fair and will include extra patrols by area agencies making sure people aren’t driving under the influence, organizers said.
In addition to the extra patrol plans two area agencies have the opportunity to come back from Columbus on Sept. 26 with a new patrol car, said Lt. Greg Leonhard of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department. He said the sheriff’s department and the Geneva Police Department are two of 40 agencies chosen to be part of a drawing to receive the new vehicles from the Ohio Department of Safety on Sept. 26.
He said the area departments each have a one in eight agency of winning the vehicle.
A Sept. 23 event is also being planned to emphasize the importance of high schools students not drinking and driving, said Safe Community Coordinator Sandy Pulsifer.
She said it will be held at the GaREAT Complex in Harpersfield Township. “We have a lot of activities from 5 to 7:30 p.m.,” Pulsifer said.
Leonhard said the event is also open to people older than high school age as well.
