Gathering where guns found bring charges

CONNEAUT — A city man who became belligerent with police at a gathering where two weapons were located was found guilty of aggravated disorderly conduct Tuesday morning in Conneaut Municipal Court.

A half-dozen other people were also cited in the incident, police said.

Anthony Taylor, 24, 297 Depot St., pleaded not guilty to the charge and was found guilty by Judge Thomas Harris, a court spokeswoman said. He was fined $50 and costs and given a 30-day jail sentence, which will be suspended if a variety of conditions are met, according to documents.

Taylor was arrested early Sunday morning in the 500 block of Clark Street, police said. Officers were sent to the address around 3:40 a.m. for a report of someone firing an air rifle. Upon arrival police discovered several people in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Officers heard a shot being fired, followed by the sound of a projectile striking an object.

With weapon drawn, an officer approached the group and noticed an air rifle on the ground. While retrieving the weapon, the officer also noticed a bag of marijuana in the back seat of a nearby vehicle. A 9 mm bullet was also on the ground, prompting a search for another weapon, police said. A 9 mm pistol was located underneath a bandanna near the street, officers said.

A search of the vehicle for more weapons turned up crack cocaine in a prescription medicine bottle, officers said. No one admitted ownership of the pistol or drugs, police said.

Taylor, who was at the scene, became belligerent and was eventually placed in a cruiser. He was cited after activating his car’s alarm system using a remote control device on the ignition key, police said.

Officers also discovered among the group a woman wanted on a drug-related warrant issued by Mentor Police Department.Six other people were cited for disorderly conduct, police said.

Six hours later, a Clark Street resident called police after discovering a window in her house had been shattered by a BB, police said.
