ASHTABULA —
An Ashtabula man was arraigned in Municipal Court Wednesday for his involvement in a Labor Day shooting.
Nickolaus R. Hettmansperger, 28, of 206 A Michigan Square Apartments, was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, court officials said.
His bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety, and he remains in the city jail, court officials said.
Hettmansperger was arrested Tuesday during a traffic stop near his home, police said.
The victim, Joseph Hunt, 35, of Ashtabula, remains hospitalized at MetroHealth in Cleveland, police said. Police said he suffered a gunshot wound to his lower back.
Police believe a revolver was used in the shooting, according to dispatcher reports.
Police responded to a call of a shooting victim on Center Street at 6:20 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found Hunt sitting on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Center Street, moaning in pain with a blood-soaked t-shirt beside him.
He was conscious and responsive when he was taken by ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center. A medical helicopter then transported him to Cleveland.
Police say Hunt and Hettmansperger had some sort of interaction in the Elm Avenue/ Center Street neighborhood before shots were fired. Police detectives are investigating the incident.
