ASHTABULA —
St. Peter’s Fine Arts Concert Series is working to assemble what will be the biggest weekend of the summer in downtown Ashtabula.
The first-ever Ashtabula County Jazz Festival will be held July 27 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, featuring Bill Dobbins, world-renowned jazz pianist, conductor, composer and arranger.
Dobbins, who is professor of Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY., will perform George Gershwin's music on piano at 7 p.m. July 27. The concert will be free and open to the public, followed by a free and open reception.
The Jazz Festival also will feature Ed Michaels, a Cleveland saxophonist, music educator, and Northwestern University graduate, as well as Dr. Timothy Kalil of Ashtabula, who is a pianist, former college piano instructor at the University of Kansas, published music author, composer, and concert presenter.
It was Kalil’s idea to bring such a concert to Ashtabula, and he’s coordinating the Jazz Festival, as well.
“Our hard-working St. Peter's Concert Committee hopes to make this an annual summer event,” he said. “Of course we planned the concert to coincide with the successful downtown Ashtabula Multi-Cultural Festival.”
The Multi-Cultural Festival will take place July 28 - 29 along Main Avenue.
“Culturally-speaking, many of us are doing our part to revitalize downtown Ashtabula,” Kalil said. “This is also good for the city and county tourism industry, as visitors and residents alike will plan their vacations around this important arts and entertainment weekend.”
