ASHTABULA —
A handful of city residents will find themselves in a new ward at the next election, thanks to the 2010 census.
City Solicitor Michael Franklin said he will have a completed ward redistricting ordinance ready for City Council’s approval at its Dec. 3 meeting.
“It will go into effect Jan. 1, 2013,” he said, noting per state law the City of Ashtabula must redistrict its wards to meet changes in demographics as noted in the 2010 census.
Every 10 years there is a national census and every 10 years the political districts at all levels change because of shifts to the population.
At the local level, only 25 to 30 people in wards four and five will be affected, Franklin said.
The idea is to have each ward represent the same number of persons.
The Ashtabula County Board of Elections is aware of the change and will notify the residents, sending them a notice in the mail.
