ASHTABULA COUNTY —
If Santa left a new coat, hat, scarf and mittens under the tree, it’s time to bundle up.
Repeated bands of lake effect snow blew into Ashtabula County all day Monday, dumping 3 to 5 inches of additional snow on the ground.
Pierpont Township was the big winner, getting more than 8 inches of the white stuff, said Brian Mitchell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
Motorists slipped off roadways and into ditches all day, keeping wrecker services busy, according to dispatcher reports.
At 5:38 p.m., a vehicle traveling on Interstate 90 flipped several times into the median, sending two people to UH Geneva Memorial Hospital, according to Ohio State Highway Patrol reports.
Forecasters said Ashtabula Countians would receive 1 to 4 more inches of snow overnight and roads would become more treacherous for drivers.
Temperatures hovered at 30 degrees with wind chills in the teens Monday afternoon as local road departments and the Ohio Department of Transportation worked to keep the roads open during the storm, according to the NWS.
“We have had six plows out since 7 a.m.,” said Dom Iarocci, superintendent of public services for the City of Ashtabula. “Obviously, the snow caught us on a holiday.”
Monday was a holiday for banks, postal workers, city and county employees and many businesses because New Year’s Day fell on Sunday.
Most area schoolchildren aren’t due back to school until Wednesday, so they didn’t have to use up a snow day.
The snow was expected to continue throughout the night as wind chill values dipped as low as zero, according to the NWS. Chance of precipitation was 100 percent. New snow accumulation was predicted to be 4 to 8 inches.
Today, snow showers are likely before 11 a.m., according to the NWS.
“The next couple of days, it’s going to be cloudy skies, with highs in the upper teens,” Mitchell said. “Wind chill is expected to stay at zero.”
There’s some good news for people who like to play in the snow.
In addition to Mother Nature’s contribution, Alpine Valley Ski Area, 10620 Mayfield Road, Chesterland, is in the process of making snow and anticipates opening at 1 p.m. Thursday.
This ski area boasts 11 trails and 72 acres of skiable terrain. There’s also an extreme park for snowboarding.
