Deputies circulate Andover Bank robber photograph

AUSTINBURG TOWNSHIP —  Detectives with the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office have distributed photos of a young man who robbed the Andover Bank in Austinburg Township late Saturday morning.

Images from surveillance cameras show a nonchalant man presenting a note demanding money to a teller. In one photo the man has a slight smile on his face.

The man entered the bank shortly before noon, moments before closing, according to a statement from Sheriff’s Detective Brian Cumberledge. He approached a teller “very casually” and produced a hand-written note for the teller to read that demanded money in “large denominations only” and in return “no one would be hurt.”

The robber made no mention of a weapon and none was displayed or produced, according to reports.

With the money in hand, the man fled the bank and was seen driving away in an older model sedan, possibly a Buick, with large, rectangular tail lights and a newer-style Ohio license plate. Deputies said the vehicle traveled south on Route 45 and then probably headed east on Route 307.

The robber is white or Hispanic, between 20 and 30 years of age, stands between 5-foot-    5 and 5-foot-7 inches tall and weighs 130 to 150 pounds. The man wore a wig that he discarded and later recovered by investigators, Cumberledge said in the statement.

People with information regarding the robbery are asked to contact the detective division at 440-576-3518.

Saturday’s robbery was the second involving an Andover Bank in less than a month. On April 7 — also a Saturday — a branch in Conneaut was robbed by a young black male who presented a note to the teller demanding money, police said. No weapon was produced and no one was hurt in that crime, detectives have said.
