Plenty of winter to go but Geneva has already used by fifth of salt

GENEVA — The city has already used 225 tons of road salt, which is one-fifth the city’s salt supply, City Manager Jim Pearson said at Monday’s City Council meeting.

“It took awhile for the city road crews to gear up and get out there, but the road crew is doing a great job, especially in the downtown area, ” Pearson said.

Pearson said the city has a 1,000-ton supply of road salt at its disposal, which is the typical amount the city purchases annually.

“It’s just that it is unusual to use one-fifth of that supply during just one storm,” he said, “so we are being careful to monitor how much salt is used and how much we have left.”

Pearson said mechanical troubles have caused some problems with the plow trucks as well.

“We did have some trouble with a couple of snow plow blades,” he said . “A specific part for two blades were corroded. The road crews simply switched out the blades with older blades and all trucks have been in use.”

Pearson said the city isn’t taking any chances with the winter weather in 2010.

“The parts for the blades are $1,000 each,” he said. “So we will order one part as our backup so just in case we need those blades, they will be ready for use.”
