Men Who Cook event raises close to $20,000 for Catholic Charities

ASHTABULA —  Catholic Charities of Ashtabula County recently held its 6th Annual Men Who Cook at the Mt. Carmel Community Center. This event raises funds for the Emergency Assistance Program at Catholic Charities, which assists individuals in need of rent, utility, prescription and food assistance. This year about 375 people attended the event, which raised almost $20,000.

Area men prepared a favorite dish, ranging from appetizers to entrees to desserts. This year’s panel of female judges — Diana Brook, Mary Pepperney, Susan Stocker, Debbi Waring, and Cheryl Woodward awarded the Judges’ Choice for the best dish of the evening to Dr. Ed Wiese of the Ashtabula Clinic, for his Corn and Cheddar Chowder. Dr. Wiese has participated in the event every year since its inception. The People’s Choice winner went to the Rev. Raymond Thomas, Pastor of Our Lady of Peace, and Vern Kirkingburg, also of Our Lady of Peace, for their Baked Chicken and Broccoli Pancotto. Other chefs and chef teams included Michael Andersen/Chris McClure, Bob Billman/Tom Fleming, Dave Bowins Dr. Jeff Brodsky/Bill Howe, Pat Colucci/Don Rapose, Sandy Deak, John Decker/Dr. Jerry Privitera, Bob Dille/Tony Silva, Dr. Tom DiSalvatore/ Mark Timonere, Michael Gardner, Kurt Gowins/John Smolen, Don Holahan/A. Andrejs Teilans, Guy Imbrogno, Jeff Imbrogno, Larry Licata, Tony Orlando, Arnie Peet, Dr. Elliott Rice, John Roskovics/Frank Roskovics, Randy Schiff, Jeff Scribben, and Steven Steele. Hunter and Paula from Magic Oldies 102.5 served as MCs for the evening.

“We continue to experience a high demand for our emergency assistance services,” says Lynn Zalewski, Executive Director, “so we are most grateful for the community’s support of this event. It’s a fun evening and a great way to help those in need. We also thank Delta Railroad Construction and Plasticolors for sponsoring the event at the Executive Chef level.”
