Heating oil drains into Rock Creek

ROCK CREEK — Local and state agencies teamed this week to remove heating oil that drained into Rock Creek from a nearby vacant house, according to Ed Koziol, Rome Township fire chief.

An undetermined amount of oil drained into the creek, Koziol said in a statement.

At 2:15 p.m. Monday, the Rome fire department was contacted by the Ashtabula County Emergency Management Agency about a possible fuel spill at 1790 Dodgeville Road. Upon arrival, firefighters red- and rust-colored stains on ice and an oil sheen on the surface of Rock Creek. Fuel oil was found flowing from a drain pipe along the east bank of the creek, Koziol said in the statement.

Firefighters entered the empty house and found heating oil on the basement floor that had flowed from a copper line attached to a 250-gallon tank, according to the statement. The line had been cut at the tank valve and a section was missing, Koziol said. Oil had entered a footer drain in the basement, according to the statement.

While, the county EMA contacted the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, firefighters placed absorbent oil pads into the drain pipe, basement floor and along the creek bank and sections of ice. Floating booms were used to contain oil on the surface of the creek.

A private contractor contacted by the Ohio EPA to transfer oil caught by the booms into a special truck.

Firefighters, EPA personnel and the private contractor completed their work shortly after midnight Tuesday, according to the statement. The house is owned by an Orwell couple, Koziol said.
