MONROE TOWNSHIP — A Monroe Township man was seriously injured when he was thrown from a horse late Sunday night, Conneaut firefighters said.
Rick Smith , 40, 6989 Richardson Road, was flown by medical helicopter to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, firefighters said.
Conneaut emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the address about 9:20 p.m., said Fire Capt. John Chapin. Upon arrival, firefighters learned Smith had been thrown from the rear of a horse.
Smith fell approximately six feet and apparently struck his head, according to a fire report.
The helicopter landed at State Line United Methodist Church on Bushnell Road, Chapin said. Smith was transported by ambulance to the landing spot, firefighters said.
The blow momentarily knocked Smith unconscious, but he was awake when firefighters were at the scene, according to a report. Several people were at the address, Chapin said.
In other news, an apartment tenant cooking food activated a smoke alarm that sent firefighters to the Orlando Brothers Golden Dawn supermarket Sunday afternoon. The apartment sits above the supermarket.
Firefighters were dispatched to the call around 1:20 p.m.
