LENOX TOWNSHIP —
Firefighters from three area departments battled a smoky, early-morning blaze at 1400 Route 46 South, said Jefferson Fire Chief John Wayman.
“The basement was full of smoke,” Wayman said. He said it was one of the smokiest fires he had seen in a long time but fortunately nobody was hurt.
Ashtabula Township, Jefferson and Rome fire departments responded to the blaze around 6:20 a.m. Friday, Wayman said. He said an electrical box overheated and caught some surrounding clothes on fire.
Wayman said there wasn’t any structural damage to the house but there was significant smoke damage throughout the home. “I’m thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $50,000 to $60,000 (in damage),” he said.
Wayman said the home is owned by Jeanine Hagerdon but he was unsure how many people were living there at the time of the fire. He said the people all got out of the home safely before firefighters arrived.
Wayman said the family would be staying with relatives. He said firefighters were on the scene for more than two hours while they completed mop-up duties after the fire was brought under control.
