Growth Partnership names scholarship winners

There were 12 small celebrations across Ashtabula County on Monday, Cindy Rabe said, as the winners of the 2012 Ashtabula County Schools Mentorship Experience scholarships were announced.

“I’m sure there were a lot of happy students today,” said Rabe, office manager of Growth Partnership for Ashtabula County. “To win a scholarship is an honor these students really worked hard to earn.”

Forty-eight students from across the county showed off their knowledge and newfound experience in medical, legal, automotive and culinary industries at the annual judging of their presentations last week.

The judges deliberated and 12 contenders took home scholarship money from Cristal Global/Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, Ashtabula Dental Associates, the Robert S. Morrison Foundation, the Ashtabula Rotary Foundation and the Star Beacon.

The scholarship awards were based on juried program-required presentations, Rabe said.

The students spent 30 hours shadowing local professionals from doctors to mechanics for their projects, Rabe said.

Rabe said some students fall in love with their studied profession, while others learn exactly what they don’t want to do for a living.

“Sometimes learning what isn’t for you is the best lesson,” she said. “The project is more about how they present themselves and what they learn than whether they pursue what they studied.”

The winners are Ben Burich of Ss. John and Paul High School, Megan Woodward of Ss. John and Paul High School, Sarah Turner of Edgewood Senior High School, Nick Hiltz of Jefferson High School, Matt Chernesky of Grand Valley High School, Caitlin Sukalac of Jefferson High School, Brianna Kingston of Lakeside High School, Breeanna Pawors of Ss. John and Paul High School, Samantha Mussig of Lakeside High School, Jacob Crislip of Edgewood Senior High School, Ashton Adkins of Jefferson High School and Morgan Nazor of Geneva High School.
