ASHTABULA —
The Ashtabula man assaulted in a fight on the west side of town last week has died and his death has been ruled a homicide, officials said Friday.
Gregory C. Attkisson, 49, of Woodman Ave., died Thursday night at a Cleveland hospital, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said.
Earlier this week, police charged David Champlin, 39, of 3834 Station Ave., with felonious assault, court records show.
Friday afternoon, police advised City Solicitor Michael Franklin that Attkisson’s death had been ruled a homicide. Franklin said he then filed an additional charge of murder against Champlin, who was arraigned on the new murder charge in Municipal Court. Bond was set at $150,000.
Murder is punishable in Ohio by a prison term of 15 years to life, Franklin said.
Witnesses to the Aug. 23 beating said Champlin slammed Attkisson to the ground and Attkisson hit his head hard on the pavement, Stell said.
The assault occurred at the corner of West 38th Street, near Station Avenue, reports show.
When someone called the police, Champlin fled the scene, reports show.
Stell said he didn’t know the trouble between the men.
Police caught up with Champlin last weekend and transported him to the Justice Center, where he was charged with felonious assault.
He now is being held in the city jail on a $100,000 cash or surety bond on the felonious assault charge in addition to the $150,000 bond on the murder charge, a court official said.
Champlin’s pretrial is set for 10 a.m. Tuesday in Municipal Court.
