PIERPONT TOWNSHIP —
Two new signs have popped up in Pierpont to welcome visitors and residents to town.
The signs were made possible through the efforts of the Pierpont Beautification Committee. The group, which is similar to ladies auxiliary, was established about 35 years ago, but was revamped about 12 to 13 years ago, said Brenda Thomson.
The group does not have very many fundraisers, so it took a very long time to make the signs a reality, Thomson said.
“The only fundraisers we have are pancake breakfasts and tea parties,” she said. “We had to save up a long time for the signs.”
The signs were made by Bill Conrad Signs in Geneva.
Although the committee ideally had a few specific locations in mind for the signs, getting permission from property owners was somewhat of a challenge for them, Thomson said.
“We had to put them where we had permission,” she said.
One of the signs is located on Route 7, south of town, and the other is located on Route 167, west of town.
“(The sign on Rt. 167) is a little further out of town, but it was where we felt we could put it,” Thomson said.
The signs were put in back in November and make a great new addition to the community, she said.
The Pierpont Beautification Committee works throughout the year taking steps to keep the community looking its best. The group is responsible for planting flowers around the community and taking care of them. It organizes a roadside garbage pick-up each spring as well, Thomson said.
For the past 10 to 12 years, the committee has hosted a number of landscaping seminars that are open to the public.
“They are free informational seminars,” she said.
The committee also put in new landscaping at the fire hall a few years back and maintains the landscaping each year. The group also made attempts to clean up the tennis court in town and painted the fence but unfortunately the tennis court itself is in such a state of disrepair, it still can’t be used, Thomson said.
One of the main responsibilities of the Pierpont Beautification Committee is purchasing the flags that are displayed along Route 167 and Route 7 during the summer months, she said.
“We have U.S. flags and the past few years we have had Ohio flags as well,” Thomson said.
Membership for the group has varied, Thomson said, as not everyone can help out with each project the committee hosts, but for the most part, the group consists of roughly eight members.
The group is made up of members of the community who volunteer their time.
Thomson said the committee is always looking for new members to lend a hand.
“Anyone who wants to join is welcome,” she said.
