ANDOVER VILLAGE — Tax season is upon us and the Andover Public Library is once again hosting the AARP Foundation Tax-Aid workshop.

The workshops are aimed at low to moderate income families, with special attention to those ages 60 and older.

“We are taking appointments like mad and are up to February already,” said Susan Hill, library director.

Appointments can be made by calling the library’s circulation desk at 440-293-6792.

Those taking advantage of the tax preparation help should bring the following with them to their appointment: Last year’s tax return; social security cards for taxpayers and dependents; picture identification; any forms showing income (W-2, etc.); expenses for 2012 such as medical, property taxes and charitable contributions; check register from 2012; and any other information that may be needed.

February is Food for Fines month at the Andover Public Library and library patrons can wipe out their fines with the donation of a non-perishable (non-expired) food item.

The food will be donated to the Pymatuning Community Food Pantry for those struggling in the community, Hill said.

“The library will see that all the donated items bring comfort to our neighbors,” she said.

The food pantry is housed in the Andover First United Methodist Church. The original large food pantry, the Mobile Pantry, was started in 2010, said Sandy John, of the food pantry.

The Valentine’s Day party has been planned for Feb. 13 from 3:45 to 5 p.m. The party is for children in grades kindergarten through second grade. Children’s Librarian Betsy Paul is calling it the Bears and Hugs Valentine Party.

“Bring your favorite friends and have some fun, food and a fabulous time,” she said.

Space is limited to 25 children. Parents can call the library to register their kids.

The library will be having a Friends Pie Sale on Valentine’s Day.

“There will be many kinds of pie available in the library for $10 each,” Hill said. “No pie is taster than Don Eyring’s creations. Come on into the library to see what we have for your sweetie.”

February is Friends of the Library month and Hill said there is no better time to become a member.

During 2012 the library’s friends purchased numerous items including E-books in the Ohio E-Book collection. The Friend’s also donated $2,000 toward the purchase of large print books and juvenile books, $340 for chairs for the computer rooms, and $400 toward the cost of the electric handicap doors, Hill said.

The friends have also donated the 2013 calendars for patrons, $500 for office supplies, book racks for DVDs and safety town t-shirts and supplies as well as much more. The group also supports the majority of the library’s programming including summer reading prizes, “Own the Night” party and prizes at PV Middle School, expenses for the Jr. Picasso Art show in April, prizes for the scarecrow contest and refreshments and gifts and prizes for the Santa open house, Hill said.

“The friends also purchased new chairs and two new tables for the juvenile/game room costing $1200,” she said. “The library friends also contribute their time helping with our programs and planning.”

Anyone interested in joining the Friends of the Andover Public Library is welcome to attend one of the group’s meetings. The friends meet the second Wednesday of each month. February’s meeting is Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. It is not a requirement to attend meetings. Individual dues is $3. A whole family can join for $5. A business sponsor is $25 and patrons can become a life member for $100.
