JEFFERSON —
Jefferson Area Local School Board took the first step Monday night toward a renewal levy, a measure that will probably come before voters in May.
The school board unanimously passed the resolution of necessity for renewal of a five year, 4.5 mill operating levy.
The board will hold a special meeting Jan. 22 to vote on whether to actually place the levy on the May 7 ballot.
The board decided not to ask for any new money, but because voters approved this levy in 1993, “we hope they will support it again,” Superintendent Doug Hladek said. “It means no new taxes.”
The renewal levy failed by 300 votes in November, according to official election results.
The board made $1.5 million in cuts for this school year and anticipates an additional $1 million in cuts for the 2013-2014 school year.
Thirty-nine positions were eliminated as part of the 2012 budget cuts.
Hladek said inflation and state and federal budget cuts have hit the district hard, especially in the areas of gasoline for the school buses and groceries for the cafeterias.
“The State of Ohio has decreased our income,” he said. “I understand that unfortunately, some families are struggling, too. But with this levy, your taxes will not go up.”
