Stinky drug suspect leads police to Geneva meth lab

JEFFERSON — A man reeking of chemicals while seated in a police car led Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies to a methamphetamine-making operation in downtown Geneva early Thursday morning, according to a report.

The tell-tale smell came from a 23-year-old Austinburg Township man arrested after a traffic stop — and brief foot pursuit in Geneva Township. The man, questioned about the pungent odor, gave information that led police to a mobile home at the Woodlawn Trailer Park in downtown Geneva, deputies said. A drug lab was ultimately found at the address and the 49-year-old owner was arrested, according to a report.

Here’s how the incident unfolded:

Around 12:24 a.m., a deputy on patrol on Austin Road in Geneva Township stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction. The driver, whom deputies said was visibly nervous, was caught trying to palm two transparent prescription bottles officers suspected contained narcotics. Field tests showed one bottle contained suspected marijuana, the other suspected meth.

While being handcuffed, the man was able to slip the grasp of an officer and ran into some nearby woods. A deputy’s canine partner gave chase and quickly subdued the suspect, according to a report.

As the man — who faces drug charges — was being driven to jail to be booked, officers detected a very strong smell of chemicals, deputies said. The man was questioned and provided a name that pointed police to the trailer park, according to a report.

The alleged meth-maker’s 2-year-old granddaughter was among a handful of people in the trailer when police arrived. In addition to drug charges, deputies will request one count of child endangering, according to a report.
