ASHTABULA — The county’s unemployment rate jumped to 14.2 percent in December 2009, portending even worse numbers for the new year as retailers typically add workers during the Christmas shopping season.
The November 2009 Ashtabula County unemployment rate was 13.1 percent.
According to civilian labor force estimates, released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on Tuesday, 7,000 of the 49,500 persons in the county’s labor force were unemployed in December.
To find a December when the county had more unemployed workers than 7,000, one has to go back to 1982, when the unemployment rate was 21.9 percent and 10,100 persons were out of work.
The county’s upward trend in December followed that of the state, which edged up from 10.6 percent in November to 10.9 percent. The national rate held at 10 percent.
In July 2009, Ashtabula County hit the thus-far highest unemployment rate of the Great Recession, 14.3 percent, with 7,100 persons unemployed. Last week, Ashtabula County Commissioner Joseph Moroski said the actual rate, when factoring in those who became discouraged and stopped looking for work, is closer to 20 percent.
