Coast Guard calls off search for plane
CONNEAUT — An aerial search of Lake Erie turned up no evidence of a plane crash, or any other mishap, according to the U.S. Coast Guard in Cleveland.
A report of an object spotted offshore of Conneaut late Tuesday afternoon resulted in a helicopter search of a wide expanse of the frozen lake, a Coast Guard spokesman said Tuesday. The search was fruitless, and there are no plans to resume the operation, he said.
Around 4:30 p.m. Monday came a report that someone scanning the lake through a telescopic sight, or other long-range optics, saw an object on the ice about three miles away. The report came from the 1100 block of Lake Road, authorities said. That initial report mushroomed into fears a plane had crashed.
A land-based response team from the Coast Guard’s Ashtabula station was sent to Conneaut to observe but saw nothing from the team members’ vantage point at Township Park. Spectators and television new crews also flocked to the site.
The incident is being attributed to a “false alarm,” he said.
