HARPERSFIELD TOWNSHIP — Two young men have surfaced as possible suspects in the vandalism that blighted the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark late last week, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department
Both suspects are 18 years old and live in the township, deputies said.
The popular park that straddles the Grand River was defaced by vandals who spray-painted symbols, racial epithets and obscenities on signs, rest rooms and a concession stand. The damage was reported Friday morning.
Deputies said they were contacted Saturday by people who read about the incident in the Star Beacon. Based on messages and symbols depicted in newspaper photos, the culprits may be two teenagers who live in the township, deputies were told.
Attempts to locate the men were unsuccessful over the weekend.
Metroparks board member Charlie Kohli said the damage will be a topic at the group’s Thursday meeting.
“We got calls from people willing to help,” said Charles Kohli. “We’re very appreciative of the people coming forward to help us out.”
Outside assistance is critical, given the park district’s meager finances, Kohli said.
“We’re very, very limited on budget,” he said. “I don’t know what we’re going to do.”
