ASHTABULA — Police on Monday nabbed a 17-year-old boy they say robbed a woman at gunpoint hours earlier.
The robbery happened at 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the 1300 block of Lake Avenue, according to police reports.
Police say a 56-year-old woman put gas in her car at the Duke and Duchess Shoppe, 1415 Lake Ave., and then left for home, also on Lake Avenue. As the woman got out of her car, she was approached by the teenager, who was wearing a hoodie and a dark mask, police said.
He pointed a gun at her and demanded she “empty her pockets,” Sgt. John Koski said. “Then he saw her purse inside the car and demanded the purse.”
The teen took the purse and fled the scene.
When police arrived shortly thereafter, the woman told them she had just left the Duke and Duchess.
“The officers looked at the (store’s) film and developed a suspect,” Koski said. “They located the vehicle.”
Police questioned the suspect’s girlfriend and quickly tracked down the suspect to Fern Avenue, Koski said.
The suspect’s name is being withheld because he is a minor. He was arrested and charged in Juvenile Court with aggravated robbery, Koski said.
“Our guys did a good job on this,” he said. “They very quickly found the suspect and solved the case.”
The victim’s money was not recovered, but Koski said he understands it was not a large amount.
