A 25-year-old man who — while handcuffed — fled a Pennsylvania court earlier this week may have been trying to reach relatives in Ashtabula County, authorities said Friday.
Shawn Hodge, of Greenville, Pa., was arraigned Friday in Mercer County District Court on charges related to Thursday morning’s dash from the courtroom of Magisterial District Judge Brian Arthur in Greenville, according to news reports. Hodge made his break while his escort was filing paperwork, according to WKBN TV in Youngstown. Hodge, still handcuffed, jumped into a van and led police from several agencies on a chase that ended at Pymatuning State Park. Hodge abandoned his ride at the park and fled on foot, the television station reported.
He was found hiding in a women’s restroom, authorities said.
Detective Lt. Van Robison of the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were put on alert after learning Hodge was criss-crossing the state line. “The pursuit went back and forth,” he said Friday.
Authorities suspected Hodge may have been trying to reach relatives that reportedly live in Williamsfield Township, Robison said.
Hodge made his escape while appearing on charges he assaulted a man Wednesday night and threatened him with a pistol, the television station reported.
