Stolen car turfs Geneva field

GENEVA —  A stolen car ended up in the middle of the soccer field at Geneva High School, but not before the driver caused some damage to the lined turf, police said.

Sgt. Joseph Webb arrived at the school on South Ridge Road at 4:13 a.m. on Thursday and found the 1999 Chrysler Sebring parked in the middle of the soccer field with the headlights still on.

Webb said he saw, “numerous circles and other damage to the soccer field turf.”

“I found the vehicle was unoccupied, with the front fender smashed and a streak of white paint on it,” he said.

Webb discovered the vehicle was stolen from an Ashtabula Township woman. Ashtabula County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene to discuss the case and photograph the vehicle and its surroundings, police reports show.

Through dispatch, Webb learned that while the owner of the car did not know the vehicle was missing, neighbors on South Ridge Road East discovered someone had gone through their vehicles and had stolen some items from the cars.

The Chrysler, which was left without keys, did start and was operable, Webb said. Officers removed the vehicle from the soccer field and returned it to the owner, police reports show.

Geneva schools Superintendent Mary Zappitelli said she was aware of the incident, but not sure of the total damage done to the soccer field.

The maintenance and repair of the fields, which the district has leased to the Spire Institute for use, are the financial responsibility of Spire, she said.

“So any correction or repair with this incident would be their responsibility,” she said.
