JEFFERSON —
Robert Boggs, formerly the director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture, a state senator and an Ashtabula County commissioner, is making the rounds touting the polices of President Barack Obama.
Boggs said one important policy lauded by the Obama administration is to focus a light on the purchase of local food. “As director of Agriculture I really focused on local foods as a means of economic development,” he said during a visit to the Ashtabula County Fair.
He said a shift of one to two percentage points (to local food production) can make a real difference. He said it would be hundreds of millions of dollars for local farmers.
“We are trying to get Kroger and other grocery stores to buy local,” Boggs said
Boggs said he is presently a member of the Farm Service Administrative State Committee and fighting for Democratic policies and Obama.
“We believe Mr. Obama stands for Midwest rural beliefs,” Boggs said.
Boggs said Obama is in favor of fairness and playing by the rules. “We have many people who play by the rules and their jobs are taken over seas or health insurance is unavailable when they need it most,” he said.
Obama wants to protect the middle class. Boggs said everyone wants to manage the debt but questions Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s tax plan.
Boggs also credits Obama for bailing out the auto industry. “Not rescuing the auto industry would have been disastrous for Ashtabula County,” he said.
