JEFFERSON —
Ashtabula Technical and Career Campus senior Alyssa Rhodes and Elizabeth Kovacs, a senior at St. John High School, spent eight weeks this summer shadowing health-care professionals for a behind-the-scenes perspective of University Hospitals Geneva and Conneaut Medical Centers. After completing a rigorous application process, Rhodes and Kovacs were selected as the 2012 delegates to the University Hospitals Summer Academy, a paid internship for students with an interest in entering the health-care field.
When the Academy began in June, Rhodes, a student in A-Tech’s Computer Information Systems program, said she was especially interested in learning about the hospitals’ state-of-the-art electronic records system. At the culmination of the Academy last week, Rhodes’ thinking had evolved. “Before now I had never even thought about being a doctor, but now I’ve been thinking about it a lot,” Rhodes said.
Kovacs, a top student at St. John High School, was investigating pharmacy schools when she began the Academy. “I came into this program fairly certain that I wanted to go into pharmacy, but the experience made me realize that I love working with patients,” Kovacs said.
Admission to the UH Summer Academy is highly selective. Only two students are invited to participate in the program each year.
Rhodes is the daughter of Daniel and Tracy Rhodes, of Ashtabula, and Kovacs is the daughter of Ray and Christy Kovacs, of Ashtabula.
