Local woman fosters puppy-mill canines

Fundraiser for care of rescued animals to be held Saturday

Fur matted, paws bleeding, eyes and ears infected — these are the dogs Lori Zebrasky rescues.

Though they may not come to her clean and friendly, Zebrasky, who works with the Marilyn’s Voice dog rescue, runs a foster home for dogs bred and raised in puppy mills.

“These dogs are abused and neglected in ways you can’t imagine,” she said. “They live in cages stacked one on top of the other. They are bred until they can breed no more, and then they are destroyed. Some of these dogs have fur so matted you can’t see their eyes. Their paws are bloody from the wire cages. It is heartbreaking.”

Marilyn’s Voice dog rescue will host Marilyn’s Got Fashion Night on Saturday at Club K-9, located at 30400 Lakeland Blvd., Wickliffe. The event is a fundraiser for the veterinary care of dogs rescued from puppy mills. Nassief Motors is a local sponsor for the event.

“The fundraiser is so we can help even more dogs and find them loving, caring homes,” Zebrasky said. “We don’t help just puppies. We get dogs from puppy mills, mostly the breeder dogs. These dogs have never experienced (a) friendly human touch. We get these dogs out of the puppy mills and get them all spayed or neutered, plus shots.”

The event will feature designs by Diva ’n’ Dapper Dogs. Participants are encouraged to bring their dogs dressed in their best clothes. Photos will be taken on the red carpet for $1. Tickets are $25 per person and $5 for the first dog and $3 for each additional dog. The cost of the event includes appetizers.

Wine, beer and cocktails will be available, and a Chinese auction will be held, as well as a 50/50 raffle. A panel of judges will award prizes for the best-dressed male and female dogs of the show.

Zebrasky, of Jefferson, said Marilyn’s Voice rescue doesn’t operate a shelter.

“We are a network of foster homes from across northeast Ohio,” she said. “I’m proud to represent the Ashtabula County portion of our rescue efforts.”

Marilyn’s Voice also takes dogs from the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League when the shelter is overcrowded and euthanasia becomes a possibility for some dogs.

“I have taken in 25 dogs in the last two years,” Zebrasky said. “We have taken nine dogs from the APL since November.”

Zebrasky said fostering animals is a great way to get involved in the fight against puppy mills and animal cruelty.

“But people should know that they should never, ever buy a dog or puppy from a pet store. Many, if not most, of those dogs were bred in a puppy mill, where the mother dogs and father dogs are kept in deplorable conditions. To save a life, adopt from a shelter or rescue and never consider a pet-shop purchase,” she said.
