It appears the Grinch has made an early stop in Ashtabula.
Sharon Hamilton, co-owner of Broken Dreams Cafe, 4601 Main Ave., said someone broke into the restaurant early Friday and stole about $200, plus donations for the Toys for Tots campaign in Ashtabula County.
Broken Dreams Cafe was one of 60 different toy-and-money collection areas for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s annual Toys for Tots drive to help needy children have a merry Christmas.
“Stealing from children at Christmas — Bah, humbug!” said Hamilton, who co-owns the restaurant with her husband, Darrell. “I hope the police catch them. I’d like to horse whip them.”
Hamilton said it appeared the perpetrator cut a hole in the front door and then reached in and unlocked the door. Also missing was a gun, a camera and a DVD recorder, she said.
“They also prepared a bag of food, but left it on the counter,” Hamilton said. “Something might have startled them and they left it.”
The Broken Dreams Cafe is not the first downtown business to be burglarized in recent weeks.
Last week, Ultimate Appearance, 4702 Main Ave., the Berean Seventh Day Adventist Church, 874 Center St., and First Baptist Church, 4353 Park Ave., were burglarized for undisclosed amounts of cash, according to police reports.
