West Prospect house fire is under investigation

ASHTABULA — Fire officials spent Wednesday investigating the cause of a West Prospect Road house fire that left a family homeless Tuesday.

None of the occupants or firefighters called to the scene was injured, but five cats died from smoke inhalation, firefighters said.

The occupants rented from property owner Dana N. Schulte of Ashtabula, according to the Ashtabula County Auditor’s Web site. The fire report does not reveal the renter’s name.

Firefighters arrived at 1030 W. Prospect around 1:14 p.m. Tuesday and discovered a fully involved fire with heavy smoke rolling from the enclosed front porch and foyer, according to a report. Black smoke also was billowing from windows on the first and second floors, as well as the attic, firefighters said.

A 25-year-old woman smelled smoke and escaped from a second-floor window, the fire report said. She went next door to Wendy’s restaurant and was treated for smoke inhalation by rescue workers, the report said. No one else was home at the time, firefighters said.

Firefighters from Ashtabula and Saybrook townships assisted at the scene.

The blaze caused an estimated $70,000 damage to the structure and contents. The house was insured but not the contents.

Renee Palagyi, executive director of the Ashtabula County chapter of the American Red Cross, said the family renting the house now is staying with family members for a few days.

Anyone willing to help the family may donate to the Red Cross Disaster Fund, Ashtabula County Chapter of the American Red Cross, 433 Center St., Ashtabula, OH 44004.
