GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE — Village safety departments have been buoyed by more than $62,000 in grants for safety equipment, communications and technology.
Village Police Chief Tim Bruckman said it took village employees hours to install the police department’s new computers but the work was well worth the effort.
The police department received $19,000 in grants through the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, Bruckman said, and purchased three personal computers and a printer-scanner, and four multiagency radio communications system (MARCS) hand-held radios with accessories.
“All are items we had to have in the police department to maintain efficiency and reliability of radio contact,” he said.
The MARCS radios were mandated by the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department two years ago. In order to continue dispatching services with the sheriff’s department, the village police department was required to purchase the radios.
Fire Chief Tim Mills said the GOTL Volunteer Fire Department purchased 25 sets of turnout gear, including helmets, boots, coats and gloves, through a $43,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG).
AFG, which is sponsored through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, strives to meet the firefighting and emergency-response needs of fire departments. AFG supplies grants for equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.
Mills said the GOTL fire department was in desperate need of new turnout gear.
“Our old gear was more than 10 years old,” he said, “Well past its prime for use.”
Mills said the grant application process was long and involved.
“We have to give all the credit for this grant money to (firefighter) Andy Kaschalk, who really went after this grant. He did a great job, and he is always looking for ways to secure grants for our department.”
