Armeni is Conneaut’s top citizen for 2009
CONNEAUT — Penny Armeni, executive director of the Conneaut Community Center for the Arts, is the city’s Citizen of the Year for 2009, officials said.
Armeni will receive her award, sponsored by the Conneaut Area Chamber of Commerce, at the Chamber’s annual meeting Tuesday night at the Days Inn. The area’s “Chamber Champions” will also be saluted at the event.
Past winners and Chamber presidents selected Armeni from a list of five nominees, said Wendy DuBey, Chamber executive director.
“I’m thrilled and shocked,” Armeni said Tuesday. “It’s very exciting.”
In addition to her work at the CCCA, Armeni serves as treasurer of the Salvation Army’s Conneaut branch, is a past president of the Conneaut Rotary Club and assists a committee working to improve the appearance of the city’s harbor district. A new memorial and fountain unveiled last year at Lake Road and Detroit Street was the group’s first project.
Armeni has been involved with the CCCA since 1987, the last few years as director. She also has taught tap dancing to hundreds of children.
In a nominating letter, the author pointed out her involvement with LEADERship Ashtabula County, United Way, the Civic Development Corporation and the local school district. “Her contributions and commitment to the Conneaut area and greater Ashtabula County communities make this a better place in which to live and work and play,” according to the letter.
The other nominees for the 2009 award were Mary Young, Gerald Eighmy, Jim Furman and Patricia Guglielmo. All have been active in community affairs for years.
“Chamber Champions” honors individuals, organizations and businesses for their civic work.
Reservations and tickets will be available at the Chamber office, Main and Washington streets, through Friday. Office hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
