Jefferson doing well financially

JEFFERSON — Amidst county-wide economic woes, Jefferson Village remains in the black.

“We are financially holding our own and we are constantly monitoring our revenue path and planning ahead,” said Terry Finger, village administrator.

In light of the Ashtabula County budget woes and recent Sheriff’s Department layoffs, the village is uncertain about income tax implications since Jefferson is the county seat.

“We are monitoring the tax situation closely,” Finger said.

“We are not planning any major expenditures and we are selling one police car to get the insurance off our books.”

The Sheriff Department’s economic situation is also a concern for the Jefferson Village Police Department, especially the availability of jail space for prisoners.

“The Sheriff will still take violent prisoners overnight until we get them into court,” said Village Police Chief Steve Febel. “We are in meetings with Ashtabula City for additional jail space.”
