The “Luck of the Irish” was not with area runners who braved snow showers Saturday morning during the Shamrock Kickoff 2 mile.
More than 60 runners participated in the race that started and ended at the Kent State University-Ashtabula Campus parking lot.
Linda Craigo, a teacher at Madison High School, designed Shamrock T-shirts for 10 of her students who participated in the race.
Several runners got into the St. Patrick’s Day theme wearing a variety of green and white accouterments to their running attire.
Area residents woke to a winter wonderland that only got worse as the morning went on and the snow deepened. Fortunately most motorists appear to have their winter driving skills intact.
Geneva Fire Department reported a Saturday morning crash on Route 20, but very few other calls, said firefighter Dale Arkenburg. “We got more snow than I think I was expecting,” he said.
Ashtabula and Conneaut fire and police departments reported no major incidents during the snowy morning hours. Conneaut police department reported several cars sliding off the road.
While snow is not in the forecast for today, weather prognosticators are calling for ice pellets to pound the area on Monday with a 70 percent chance of precipitation.
Several local establishments are planning for traditional St. Patrick’s Day fun with the Lodge at Geneva State Park serving green drink specials at Horizons Restaurant and Brennan’s serving Irish food and hosting live entertainment Sunday evening.
