Grandma leaves kids in hot car

JEFFERSON —  A 41-year-old Andover woman faces criminal charges after she reportedly left three young grandchildren in a hot vehicle Saturday morning, deputies said.

Deputies were sent to the Pymatuning Drive-In flea market about 9:30 a.m., deputies said. Passersby had spotted three children — ages, 9, 3 and 1 — sitting in a car with the windows rolled up with the air conditioning not running, deputies said. The children were removed from the car by the passersby. When deputies observed the children, they were sweating profusely and their skin was warm to the touch.

The grandmother told deputies she had left the children alone for only five minutes while she shopped for food. The vehicle was still cool from the air-conditioned ride to the flea market and the children had beverages, she said. One child had a warm container of milk while another had warm water, deputies said.

The woman had custody of the children, deputies said. Children Services took custody of the youngsters.
