An early-morning traffic stop in Hartsgrove Township on Tuesday resulted in a drug-related charge for one of the passengers of the pickup that was stopped. According to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department report, a deputy noticed that the vehicle did not have its rear license plate illuminated, which resulted in the stop. The 32-year-old male driver admitted to driving under suspension. A 31-year-old male passenger from Dorset provided a false name and Social Security number to the deputy. The deputy noticed plastic bags and a can of Coleman fuel in the bed of the truck, and asked for permission to conduct a search of the vehicle. A package of an over-the-counter drug containing pseudoephedrine was found in a bookbag. The driver and a 19-year-old female passenger told the deputy that they belonged to the 31-year-male passenger, who has prior charges and convictions for manufacturing meth. The man faces a charge of possession of chemicals to manufacture meth and obstruction of official business. He also had two warrants from Pennsylvania, and the driver had an active warrant from Ashland County.
