ASHTABULA —
Area swimmers are seeking a few helpers to help raise money for a variety of items needed by the Ashtabula YMCA aquatics program, said YMCA aquatics director Rose Nick.
“We want to have at least 50 people and normally we’ve had 10 to 20,” Nick said of several previous swims designed to raise money for the program. She said the demand for swim time has increased.
“Our classes are full all day,” Nick said. She said 24 swimmers have signed up to swim from Geneva State Park Marina to Walnut Beach to be held Aug. 25 beginning around 7 a.m. and completing mid to late afternoon if all goes well.
Nick said four swimmers will swim at any given time with a boat handling the rest of the swimmers. She said a variety of swim equipment is needed.
“Kickboards, hand paddles and rescue tubes,” Nick said of some of the items needed.
Nick said she hopes to raise $5,000 to $7,500 from the event. She said anyone interested in swimming should participate in a team training session to insure safety.
“This is a relay. Everyone will swim about 20 minutes,” said Mike Sabeh of Geneva-on-the-Lake. He said kayakers will paddle along as well.
Sabeh said swimming has helped him maintain a healthy lifestyle losing about 85 pounds in the last several years.
