When the weather is hot, everyone looks for a way to cool off. For many children, nothing cures a mid-summer sizzle better than cold ice cream or an icy drink.
That’s what Brian Cusano was thinking when he took his 2-year-old son, Jayden, to the Edgewood Dairy Queen, 1719 E. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, Friday afternoon.
“He likes ice cream,” Cusano said.
But when a photographer appeared to take Jayden’s picture, the youngster put down the cup of vanilla and chocolate ice cream and concentrated on smiling for the camera.
Dorothy Rohm, a manager at the Dairy Queen, said business usually starts picking up around 2 p.m., with evenings being the busiest time of all.
“Children love ice cream cones, Blizzards and (the Dairy Queen’s icy drink) Arctic Rush,” she said. “Blue, which is raspberry flavor, seems to be the most popular.”
Wild raspberry-flavored Slush Puppies are popular with children at Tony’s Dog House, 528 Lake Ave., in the Ashtabula Harbor, said Tony Romano, owner.
“They come in, get a hot dog and a Slush Puppie,” he said. “We’re selling a lot of milkshakes and popsicles, too.”
Mr. C’s Ice Cream Station, at Interstate 90 and Route 45 in Austinburg Township, is where folks can get scoops of “hard ice cream,” employee Stephanie Winters said.
“The children love Superman ice cream; it’s bright blue, yellow and red swirled,” she said. “People say it tastes like birthday cake and icing.”
Superman ice cream also took the No. 1 slot at Cosmic Kone, 4840 Route 534 in Geneva-on-the-Lake, according to Jeff Clark, owner.
“They like the hard scoop ice cream,” he said. “We have all these cosmic flavors, too, like Cotton Candy. It’s blue.”
