ASHTABULA —
The Ashtabula Police Department will receive $450,000 worth of equipment through federal grants.
A police officer who wishes to remain anonymous, searched the Internet, and thanks to his efforts, the police will be receiving about $450,000 worth of government equipment, City Manager Anthony Cantagallo said. Some of it will be new, he said.
“A great deal of it is barely used,” he said. “Most of it is still in its package.”
The items include night vision glasses, spy scopes, clothing and other police-officer gear, Cantagallo said.
The equipment is expected to arrive soon, Cantagallo said.
The department’s special weapons and tactics team will benefit most from the grant, he said.
Another grant, $18,500 for drug enforcement, also has been awarded to the police department, Cantagallo said.
At the City Council meeting June 6, Cantagallo thanked Chief Robert Stell and asked him to thank the officer who worked to get the city the equipment.
“I’d like to give him a heartfelt thank-you,” he said.
The 30-member police department has weathered a rough year, including layoffs;. All but one officer have been recalled, though.
